Designed by Mexican architectural office JSª, the project we developed for Liverpool Angelopolis in Puebla focuses on the envelope, and favors the container over the content. It is a department store that does not require a continuous relation to the outside. We considered it was important to generate at least one area of contact from inside the box through its envelope, using the space planned for the cafeteria. The solution of adding a lattice seeks to generate a ventilated facade with climatic inputs thus generating an interstitial space, creating depth and chiaro oscuros between the facade of the box itself and the outer casing. Contrary to the perception of space from the interior, this proposal aims to create in the user a three-dimensional spatial quality surrounding a static volume.
For the design process we developed a parametric model with a single module that generates variations, where the casing opens and closes as it reaches the edges of interior volume. The original module came from the basic principle of a clay lattice. With deformations applied to this initial model we achieved an optical effect, which blurs the transition from a solid to a multi-perforated envelope that controls the sunlight at various points. To control the envelope we created a continuous grid in which each individual variation of each of the 6.500 modules of which it is composed, directly affects the remaining modules, thus achieving an envelope where each piece is unique.
