Inspired by the client’s experience with Scandinavian winters, the terrace is designed with neutral materials of bluestone, cement board, and accented by an Aloe tinted resin.

Evan Lai reinforced the roof with steel i-beams to allow for the load capacity of an exterior sauna, stone buffet, bluestone pavers, and aluminum patina planters.

Elements of resin are carried throughout the design: using it as a stripe in the bench at equal elevation to the panel in the bulkhead, pergola rafters, and glowing daybed.

Existing skylight was facaded to create a glowing lightbox/ daybed. Client lounges while allowing daylight to penetrate to house below, and glow at night. The translucent pergola rafters above the exterior shower and doorway allow for privacy while showering, but also light to pass through.

This design was about prioritizing functionality without eliminating grace and beauty.
