Saninten house exemplifies contemporary tropical house notion that is nestled in an urban site. Its notion focused on three main aspects in its design process, which are refining the interrelation of an indoor, semi outdoor, and outdoor activity or loop of activities, it’s also dealing with the composition of solid and void within its arrangement (enclosed and open space-light court/courtyard), and it is a two storey house with a gradual saddleback roof slope approached.
It has two main entries, one is entering through the main door with continuous framed sequences of guest room, living room, dining room and garden beyond, and the other entry is coming into garage with light court view, it has two choices to enter the house from this side, either entering direct to guest or to living room. The main idea of the 1st storey was to have permeable spaces where all elements are openable and moveable (transformable). Thus in turn this concept allows the flexibility on the space arrangement, the space could be used for any activities and yet in the same time it is changeable to its original plan. In the same storey there are one powder room provided for guest, master bedroom that is adjacent to the backside garden, and also kitchen, maid’s room and bathroom.
Inside the living room set of wooden staircase with narrow glass slit beside it light up the living room at noon time and leading to the 2nd storey which comprises of family room, three bedrooms, and a toilet. While sitting in the family room the space allow us to look through the guest room below and also it is being used to make an ease for family members communication for everyday activities.
Saninten house composed in few materials which predominantly are using stone wall and floor, painted brick wall and local wood as an idea to have a temperate space effect and yet it is an effort to optimize the natural ventilation and light through set of courtyards in front, center and back part. In its design process involvement of the owner took an important role, for us this design evolution of through step by step discussion on all aspects it is equally important as the final result.
